Economic Development 101 Course Held for Elected Offiicials

on May 23, 2013

During the recent Competitive Realities Study performed by Garner Economics on Chambers County, one of Garner’s recommendations was to hold an educational institute for elected officials to educate them on the importance of economic development within our area.  On May 1, 2013, the CCDA held a course for all elected officials throughout Chambers County to become educated on economic development on a local and state level. Speakers on the agenda for this seminar included the CCDA staff; David Quinney from Alabama Power; Lacy Beasley, The Shopping Center Group; Gary Faulkner, Alabama Department of Commerce; Kelly Graham, Alabama Department of Revenue; Ernie Cowart from EDPA; and Bobby Jon Drinkard, AIDT. The course was packed full of information about site requirements, the site selection process, incentives, tax credits for companies, retail, utility importance, training, etc. There were 11 elected officials that attended the course.  The CCDA was pleased with the turn out for the first year and has plans to continue to build the course in the years to come. “It is very important we understand the importance of one another’s roles within our community and make sure the relationships are there between those roles”, Gray said. For more information about the course or to get a copy of the presentations from the course please contact Valerie Gray of the CCDA at 334-642-1412.
