"Are We on the Same Page"
Economic development has been described by many as a science and art. It is a complex process that is always in motion and never ends. In today’s highly competitive global environment, those communities and regions that are adaptable, flexible, have an excellent product to present and understand the value of quality public and private leadership are those that consistently win in the economic development arena, whether it’s in business recruitment, entrepreneurial development or business retention and expansion. The Chambers County Development Authority has requested the services of Garner Economics to assist in evaluating the area and performing a competitive realities assessment and industry targeting review on the County. Part of this process is a community wide presentation that Jay A. Garner, CEcD, CCE will present to community leaders and stake holders titled “Are we on the same page? Understanding what makes good communities great.”
“This is not a strategic plan” stated Valerie Gray, Executive Director of the Chambers County Development Authority. “The CCDA Board of Directors recognizes that we are yet again at another crossroads. The future of Chambers County depends on our successful implementation of a strong targeted economic development program and it is simply not feasible to conduct business as usual.” Garner and his team will conduct the assessment in 3 phases which are designed to work in tandem with each other; discovery, strategy and implementation. Jay A. Garner, CEcD, CCE is the president and founder of Garner Economics, LLC, an economic development and site location consulting firm headquartered in Atlanta, Ga. There was a community wide meeting held on May 4, 2012 at 10:30 am est at the West Point Depot in West Point, GA. The CCDA invited all citizens to attend the meeting. The CCDA also personally invited all elected officials as well as those running for public office in Chambers County. Jay Garner, a 32 year award winning veteran of the site location consulting, economic development and chamber of commerce professions discussed those characteristics that successful communities in North America have in common as they work to advance their economic vitality. Jay also briefly pinpointed things that Chambers County can do to improve itself on a short term basis. Throughout this process Jay will evaluate all aspects of Chambers County and work closely with the CCDA to develop a plan for improvements, target industries, and many other ways Chamber County can become the best community it can be. Once the research is complete, Jay will them come back to hold another community wide to tell of his findings and give suggestions on how to go about implementing these recommendations. The process will take approximately 12 weeks and will take a lot of community support from citizens, organizations, and elected representatives.
